As Momgevity’s marketing director, I’m usually focused on strategy, content, and campaigns. But lately, we’ve been spotlighting our experts’ summer travels in our Expert Travel Series, and it inspired me to reflect on my own recent getaway. 🚢
Our family cruise to Cabo was a chance to step away from my desk and into a slower pace of life. I wasn’t thinking about deadlines or deliverables. I was thinking about breakfast on the balcony, ocean sunsets, and how nice it felt to simply be with my family.
It reminded me how much the right trip can leave you feeling refreshed instead of drained. Between the moments of exploration and pure relaxation, I found myself thinking about what makes a summer vacation truly work for both adults and kids. Here are my top tips for planning a trip that leaves everyone happy when you get home. ☀️

🚤 1. Pick a Destination That Matches Your Energy
Before you book anything, ask yourself: Do I want to come home energized or recharged? Your answer will help you decide whether to go for something adventurous like a city with museums and activities, or something restorative like a quiet beach.
Mom Tip: Be honest about your bandwidth. If you’ve been running nonstop, choose somewhere that allows for real downtime instead of packing your schedule.

🤸♀️ 2. Balance Kid Fun with Adult Joy
A great vacation has something for everyone. On our cruise, the kids loved the pool deck and water slides while the adults enjoyed music, good food, and late-night shows.
Mom Tip: Even one or two “just for you” moments, like a spa visit or a morning coffee with no interruptions, can completely change how you feel by the end of the trip.
⏰ 3. Keep the Travel Time Manageable
Vacation energy disappears fast if you spend too much of it in airports, on long drives, or figuring out complicated connections. Shorter travel means more time enjoying your destination and fewer meltdowns from kids and adults alike.
Mom Tip: If the trip takes more than four or five hours door-to-door, plan a light first day when you arrive.

🧘♀️ 4. Build in Flexibility
You can have the perfect itinerary, but weather, moods, and energy levels change. On our trip, some of the best memories came from swapping plans for a slower morning or an unplanned activity.
Mom Tip: Choose destinations with both indoor and outdoor options so you can pivot without stress.

💵 5. Stick to a Budget That Lets You Breathe
The best vacation isn’t the most expensive one. It’s the one you can enjoy without worrying about the bill when you get home. Decide what matters most to you before booking, whether that’s eco-friendly lodging, supporting local businesses, or splurging on a special experience.
Mom Tip: Give kids a set souvenir budget. It helps them practice money mindfulness and prevents constant “Can I have this?” requests.

You don’t need the perfect trip, just the right trip for this season of life. When you choose a destination that matches your energy, works for everyone, and gives you room to relax, you come home with something far more valuable than photos. You come home with memories your family will talk about for years. 🤍
